11 Kitchen Essentials Every Real Adult Should Own At Their First Place

Maybe you’re finally moving into your own place out of your parent’s house.

Or you’re getting married and looking to fill your wedding registry.

Or you just know it’s time to get your sh*t together.

Whatever your situation is, this kitchen essentials list will give you the most useful kitchen tools to help you feel like a real adult!

1. Quality Knives Set

One of the main things I learned when taking a professional online cooking course, was that knives are one of the most important kitchen tools you own!

Quality knives are a kitchen staple, especially your chef’s knife. This is the one you’ll most likely be cutting with most often.

Now sets of knives can get very expensive very quickly, so I recommend either just investing in one really great chef’s knife, or buying a middle of the road set (like this set!) unless you’re serious about cooking.

If you really want to invest in your kitchen knives, I would buy these in a heartbeat!

Also, knives are a kitchen tool to upgrade immediately if you want to remain safe while cooking. And keep them sharpened. Dull blades are dangerous.

2. Kitchen Utensil Set

Every kitchen needs a utensil set that includes all the tools you’ll use every day and some that you never knew you needed until you’re in the middle of trying out a new recipe.

I have an Amazon Echo and it’s always showing me incredible recipes to try out.

Somedays, on a whim, I’ll decide to cook up whatever it suggests. I can’t be the only one who does this, right?

Anyways, It would be a real shame to get all inspired to try out something new, and then realize that you don’t own a vegetable peeler.

Guess we’re having mashed potatoes with the skin on tonight!

3. High-Speed Blender

I’ve already talked extensively about my love for the Vitamix in my previous Home Essentials Actually Worth Buying article, but I will reiterate here because it’s just that amazing!

If you ever make smoothies, milkshakes or soups, you need this blender. Everything blends with ease and to the perfect consistency.

Plus, they last forever! But if somehow something does happen to go wrong, they offer a lifetime warranty.

Once you transition from a cheap blender to a Vitamix, you’ll understand all of the hype.

4. Cutting Board

When you become an adult, you start to discover the value of everything you have (because you paid for it!), and then you realize how important it is to keep your things nice.

Cutting boards help you do just that. They protect your counters from your new, sharp knives. The grooves in this cutting board also help to prevent any juices from contaminating your countertops.

This is especially important if you’re renting. No one wants to be hit with any extra fees after moving out!

5. Mixing Bowls

If you’re going to do any sort of baking, mixing bowls are a must-have kitchen product!

I really love these stainless steel mixing bowls because they don’t retain any odors or colors from whatever you used them for previously.

And they’re also super cute with tons of five-star reviews so you can’t go wrong!

6. Electric Wine Bottle Opener

Imagine this: You invite a friend over for the evening. They bring a bottle of wine for you both to enjoy so you can have a great evening relaxing and catching up.

But you don’t own a wine bottle opener. Or even more embarrassing, neither of you can figure out the manual bottle opener. So you’re both left awkwardly wondering what to do next.

This is where the electric wine bottle opener will make your life so much easier. It’s perfect for those of us (Yes, me included!) who struggle with the manual ones.

It’s super convenient and you just need to know how to operate a button.

Here’s a little video that shows exactly how an electric wine bottle opener works:

7. Wine Glasses

Get yourself a nice pair of wine glasses because drinking wine out of any other type of glass just feels wrong!

Even if you’re not a drinker, it’s always nice to have in case of a special evening or for guests.

Aren’t these the most gorgeous wine glasses you’ve ever seen?

8. Pots & Pans Cookware Set

Owning quality pots and pans are essential to every kitchen.

And quality doesn’t have to mean super expensive!

This set is perfect if you want cookware that will last. Plus you can’t beat that price!

I actually own this set myself & recommended it before in my home essentials actually worth buying article!

9. Colander Set

This set of three colanders are durable and multipurpose. You’ll never need to buy new ones!

The set comes with three sizes so you have one for rinsing small fruits and vegetables, a medium for pasta & canned goods, then the large for potatoes or if you’re cooking for a large group.

10. Coffee Maker

Having a coffee maker is an obvious necessity if you’re a coffee drinker, but if you’re not, I still highly recommend owning one for house guests.

Some of us can’t get through our day without a coffee and prefer not to overspend at a coffee shop.

Yes, I may be talking about myself here. If I stay over at your place, I need to be sure I can get my caffeine fix in the morning! Please tell me I’m not alone in this.

I would go with this coffee maker because it’s on the cheaper side, but still looks really nice!

11. Glass Storage Containers for Leftovers

Now, this may just be a personal choice, but I think that this is one of those little things that can make you feel like a real adult.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with having an overflowing cabinet of plastic tupperware. We’ve all been there.

However, having some nice glass storage containers can give your kitchen a more expensive feeling and they’re better for our health.

Did you know that chemicals in the plastic leach into our food and have been linked to serious health problems?

Were any of these items on your essentials list for setting up your kitchen?

Let me know in the comments!

Great suggestions. I usually avoid the kitchen but I’ve been cooking more since quarantine and I realized that I need to upgrade some of my kitchenware.

I love the list, and I have most of the items, no wine bottle opener, since I don’t drink wine. Yet I guess it would be good to have if I ever have any guest over. Although I do prefer plastic storage container, you know the ones you get from the excellent lunch meat and butter dishes.

Thank you so much! And I totally get it. It’s awesome that you’re reusing plastic containers!

I have most of these covered, but there are a few I need to work on. We really need a better set of pots and pans, since some of what we have has been with us for about 40 years. It’s time for new. Thank you.

Wow! If they’ve lasted 40 years, that’s amazing! I think you deserve some new ones lol
